About the NDIS in Western Australia

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a national support scheme that is being introduced for people living with a disability. It is intended to give people living with long term disability more choice and control over the support and services they can receive to help achieve their goals and improve their quality of life.

Western Australia trialled two different models of the NDIS, one managed at a state level (WA NDIS) and the other managed at a national level by the NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency).

In December 2017 it was announced that the NDIA will take over responsibility for delivery of the NDIS in Western Australia from 1 July 2018. All current WA NDIS participants will be transferred to the nationally delivered scheme between April 2018 and December 2018. All new referrals to the NDIS will be managed by the WA NDIS until 1 July 2018.

PMH service to patients accessing the NDIS

PMH will continue to provide for your child’s health needs regardless of whether they are receiving services through the NDIS. The NDIS will provide supports and services to assist with your child’s disability needs.

You may not have thought about your child’s additional needs as “health needs” or “disability needs” before. It is helpful to understand the difference between these when applying for the NDIS, as it will explain why some of your services come from the NDIS and others come from PMH.

If you are applying for the NDIS or receiving services through the NDIS please tell the PMH doctors or health care staff at every visit.


PMH provides “health needs” NDIS provides “disability needs”

Health needs are things your child needs to manage short and long term medical conditions. This includes services like:

  • Diagnosis of a condition or disability
  • Seeing specialist doctors, nurses and therapists
  • Having an operation or being treated for an illness
  • Recovering from an operation
  • Rehabilitation after an injury or illness
  • Monitoring your child’s health
  • Scans and blood tests
  • Emergency services
  • Medicines
  • Some consumables

PMH will continue to provide your child’s medical needs, even if they are receiving supports through NDIS funding.

These are things your child needs to help them participate in society. They do not relate to the treatment of medical conditions but help them to join in with activities at home or in the community. This may include things like:

  • Long-term equipment
  • Prosthetics and orthotics
  • Services such as Speech, OT, Physio, Psychology, Social Work and Dietetics
  • Some carer supports
  • Some consumables
  • Home and car modifications to assist with better access

These are items and services which are provided to limit their disability from getting worse over time or help them to have a better quality of life living with their disability.



A child may be eligible for the NDIS if:

  • They live within a WA NDIS area
  • They have a permanent disability that results in substantially reduced functional capacity that is likely to need life-long support


  • They are under 6 years of age and have developmental delay that will be assisted by early intervention.

Talk to the doctors, therapists or nurses at PMH who know your child well if you are unsure whether your child will qualify.

These contact details will change in July 2018 when the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) launches in Western Australia.
It is a good idea to talk to the staff at PMH when you begin your application process. Staff can give you a report to help explain your child’s diagnosis and their extra needs.

Once you have applied, a local NDIS coordinator will contact you and ask for information about your child’s residency and disability. Once the NDIS has all required paperwork, please allow a further 21 – 28 days for notification on whether your application has been approved.

If the NDIS considers your child is eligible, your coordinator will work with you to develop a NDIS plan that will help meet your child’s needs. Support services may be funded in the areas such as education, employment, independence, living arrangements and health and wellbeing.


Planning for your child’s future

Before the planning meeting with your coordinator think about how you would like your child’s life to be and what would help work towards these goals. Consider what works well for your family, what you would like to keep the same and what you might like to change. The planners will ask questions like:

  • How would you like your/ your child’s life to be? (your vision)
  • What is your current situation? (your story)
  • What would you like to build on? (your goals)
  • How can this happen? (your strategy)

Tell the planner about your child’s needs and explain how they are different from what an average child of the same age needs. Let them know if there are times that you feel your child is not safe. This will help your planner to fully understand your child’s needs.
