Registered Nurse on Ward 4A at Perth Children's Hospital

Maddison

Maddison is a Registered Nurse, working on Ward 4A at Perth Children's Hospital.

Why did you choose a career in nursing?

I chose a career in nursing because I wanted a career path that was rewarding, yet challenging at the same time. You never know what is going to come through the ward. It can be some of the toughest times for our patients, and the fact I can help make a small difference during this time makes the job worth it.

Tell us about how you got this role

I heard through a friend that this role was available. The Supported Introduction into Child and Adolescent Nursing (SIIPAN) program was the perfect opportunity for me to transition from working with adults into a career in paediatrics. I was able to join the recruitment pool at CAHS and was offered multiple interviews across a variety of wards looking for recruits. It was a process in which I ended up in a role that I love.

What are the best bits about working here?

The best parts about working for CAHS is definitely the support that I get from all areas. I was fortunate enough to be part of the SIIPAN program, where I was allocated facilitators who would come around and I could easily call upon whilst I was on shift and would offer any help that I needed. I found this helped in my transition from adults to paediatrics as no question was too silly and I felt myself become more confident in my abilities because of the support systems that I had around me.

What are the most challenging parts about working here?

The most challenging parts of working here is the risk of burnout. It can be very challenging, both physically and mentally to take care of our patients day in, day out. I’ve realised it is so important to look after myself and also to look out for my colleagues as well.

What is the most rewarding thing about being a nurse?

The most rewarding thing about being a nurse is knowing that you are always there to give a helping hand and make a difference in someones life, no matter how small. At CAHS, this includes both the patients and their families who are going through a tough time. Nursing is such a rewarding career and I am grateful to be a part of it.

Five reasons to come and work at CAHS

  1. An amazing support network
  2. Highly rewarding career
  3. Opportunities for growth
  4. A fun and challenging work environment
  5. A workplace that values collaboration and teamwork
