An inquiring mind and love of problem-solving drew Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) inaugural research manager Dr Laura Dondzilo to a career in science.

Prior to her recent appointment to CAMHS, Laura had spent a decade pursuing ‘experimental research’ at the University of Western Australia (UWA), during which time she also completed a PhD that investigated the role of cognitive risk factors in body image and eating disturbances.

‘I’ve always had an inquisitive nature,’ Laura reveals.

‘And I love problem-solving; finding innovative solutions that can improve – and save – people’s lives.

‘I have also been very interested in research methodology and design. I’m always thinking what’s the most appropriate measure to use, how do we do this to get the best results.’

Laura, whose background is in psychology, has also enjoyed the collaborative aspects of research and says she has worked hard over many years to develop a network of leading national and international collaborators.

She hopes this network, together with her adjunct research position at UWA, will help her enhance opportunities for CAMHS researchers to get involved in collaborative research projects, and access leading experts and resources.

After a career in academia, doing research of her own, says she looks forward to using her experience to help others.

‘As I progressed in my career, I discovered that I also loved leading teams,’ she says.

Now she has the chance to exercise that leadership. In her new position, Laura will not only lead CAMHS research operations and strengthen activity in areas that have been previously neglected but will also support researchers with their projects, including through improved policy and opportunities for training and development.

Laura says research will play a key role in CAMHS reform and she expects much of its research focus will be on evaluating treatments, to find out which ones are working effectively.

Laura studied ballet growing up but now has a passion for partner dancing and says outside of work, she can regularly be found indulging in her love of various Latin and Brazilian dance forms such as Zouk, Bachata and Kizomba.
