While you are here
Coming to see your baby
Parents are welcome to be with their baby in the neonatal unit at any time. There is no limit on the amount of time you can spend with your baby.
Grandparents can visit during normal visiting hours (8am to 8pm) and must be accompanied by a parent at all times.
There is a maximum of two adults at the bedside and children (including siblings) are not permitted.
Please contact the creche at King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH) or the childcare centre at Perth Children's Hospital (PCH) for more information about childcare for siblings while you are visiting your baby.
Visiting conditions are subject to change at any time.
Behaviour and Safety
All families, patients, visitors and staff have the right to feel safe in hospital.
Being under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, physical or verbal aggression and abuse will not be tolerated and may result in a request to leave the hospital grounds.
If you see any behaviour that you are concerned about or feel may impact on you or your baby’s safety, please speak to a staff member immediately to contact Security.
- Please wear shoes at all times within the neonatal unit to prevent accidental falls or slips.
- No food or hot drinks are permitted within the neonatal unit for infection and safety reasons. You are welcome to use the parent lounge to eat, drink and take a break.
- Please do not walk around holding your baby. Use their cot to move around the unit. Please speak to your bedside nurse before moving the cot.
- Please remember to keep the cot sides up when you are not sitting next to your baby to prevent falls.
- You are welcome to take photos of your baby, however, please do not include other babies in the photo.
What can I do if I am concerned or feel like I am not being heard?
If you are worried about your baby or concerned their condition is getting worse, we want you to tell us.
If you don’t feel your concerns are being heard, you can:
- Talk to your nurse
- Ask to talk to the nurse coordinator or doctor
Always feel free to ask questions if you are unsure about what the nurses and doctors are doing to help your baby. We want to ensure you feel your role as a parent is heard and valued.
If you still feel concerned that your baby’s condition is getting worse and you have not had an appropriate response, you can make an Aishwarya's CARE Call (Call and Respond Early).
At PCH
Aishwarya's CARE call number is 6456 0337
This contacts the Medical Emergency Team who will provide an urgent review of your baby.
At KEMH
Aishwarya’s CARE call number is 0414 930 196
A medical review will be arranged for your baby.
Data collection
Data is collected on every patient that comes to the neonatal unit.
This captures the number of admissions, demographics, and diagnosis of patients admitted.
The data is used to assist with the management of resources and planning in the neonatal unit as well as improving practice and patient outcomes.
This data is different from any collected as part of research projects your baby may be involved with.
