Emotional first aid kit
It's important for people of all ages to think about what they need to stay well and feel mentally healthy every day.
An emotional first aid kit contains supportive resources that you can turn to when you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low or stressed.
Every person is unique and will need different items and ways to feel calm, soothed and ready to take on life's challenges.
Here are some ideas of what you can keep in your emotional first aid kit:
- Something calming like music, coping statements, colouring sheets and pencils, scented hand cream, a fidget toy or a game.
- Something cozy like a hot chocolate sachet, a book or magazine, a soft toy or essential oils to pop in a warm bath.
- Something that's a good memory. This could be a treasured photo of a happy event, a celebration or someone you love (including your pets!).
- Someone you trust. Think about the person you might feel comfortable calling or texting if you're going through a difficult time. It could be someone in the family, a friend or a helpline number.
You can also create a digital first aid kit with words and reminders on your phone or tablet.
Think about what you might like to put in yours and where you might need to keep it – you may need one for school and one for home!
