Managing Potential Breaches in the Conduct of Research
Access to and use of patient records and medical data
As a public health service there are legislative requirements that guide the access to and use of patient records and medical data. This includes patient/family contact information. There can be confusion regarding appropriate and approved access when research (and researchers) overlap between CAHS and our partner organisations. There are some guidelines and policies available that explain what researchers need to know to ensure compliance with the legislation that regulates patient confidentiality.
Please contact the CAHS Research Ethics team for advice or further information.
CAHS Digital Medical Record
The Digital Medical Record (DMR) is a digitised version of the paper medical record. The application is live at Perth Children's Hospital as of Wednesday 22nd November 2023.
The introduction of the Digital Medical Record is revolutionising the way patient care is delivered, offering clinicians immediate access to patient information at the very point of care, resulting in a more coordinated and efficient approach to treatment. The DMR improves the interaction and communication among patients, families, and clinicians.
External Researchers at CAHS
External researchers (e.g., from Universities or Research Institutes) who are working on-site at Perth Children’s Hospital under the supervision of CAHS clinicians are able to gain read only DMR access with approval from the Director of Research Operations. Please refer to the following onboarding and training Work Instruction documents.
Mandatory training and clearances
As a public hospital and health service, there are policies and guidelines around mandatory training, immunisation and health checks that are necessary to ensure the safety of researchers, staff, patients and visitors. Researchers who do any work on a health service site or with our patients must have relevant training and clearances prior to commencing their work.
Please contact Clinical Nurse Manager Research for more information.
