Aboriginal child health immersion program

Aboriginal student doctors from all three medical schools in WA are invited to apply for a funded, extra-curricular week of face to face learning in Aboriginal child health at CAHS, based out of PCH on the QEII Medical Campus.

They will be given an interesting and dynamic introduction to Aboriginal child health with clinical placements, tutorials, mentoring, reflective supervision and student networking opportunities over five days.

The annual program offers:

  • a mix of clinical placements, tutorials, mentoring, reflective supervision and student networking opportunities that supports your medical training (completely extracurricular)
  • The opportunity to introduce, consolidate or extend specific learning in Aboriginal child health
  • Create interest and opportunities for ongoing association with CAHS
  • Students will meet senior staff from:
    • CAHS Aboriginal Health
    • Koorliny Moort "Walking with families"
    • Many PCH departments including General Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Respiratory, Neonatal, Ear, Nose and Throat, Cardiology, Psychology and Infectious Diseases
    • Aboriginal Health community child health settings

Who can apply?

Pre-clinical year and clinical year Aboriginal student doctors from all three WA medical schools in any year group are invited to apply for one of 12 places in the program. Both returning and new students are eligible.

More about the program

  • Pre-clinical year students attend daily for a half day program with participation in clinical teaching sessions and non-clinical components with mentoring, reflective supervision and student networking opportunities.
  • Clinical year students attend daily for a full day program with additional clinical placements throughout the week.
  • The program also has flexibility to be tailored to specific student learning interests.
  • The program is based on participation and does not include assessment or submission requirements.
  • Student bursaries are provided; $1,000 for clinical students attending the full day program and $500 for students attending the half day program.
  • This program is run yearly.
