On Saturday 17 August 2024, Minister for Health, the Hon Amber-Jade Sanderson MLA, announced a donation by the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation of $135.5 million over the next decade to a multi-partner collaboration to support Western Australian children and young people with cancer.
Across Australia, cancer is the leading cause of death by disease for children.
The generous philanthropic donation, one of the largest in WA’s history, will not just change the lives of children currently living with cancer, but will also help to advance cancer research and treatment into the future building upon the significant work already being undertaken by Perth Children’s Hospital and Telethon Kids Institute.
Valerie Jovanovic, Child and Adolescent Health Service Chief Executive said the funding will enable us to improve outcomes for children with cancer through research of more effective and less toxic treatments.
“We have a great opportunity to do more in this space and give our children and young people access to world-leading care and research,” Ms Jovanovic said.
“It will allow our researchers and clinicians to contribute to these advances and lead the field in their areas of expertise.”
At the announcement, Angus Hollington, a survivor of childhood cancer, shared his lived-experience and gave heartfelt insight into what this funding will mean to children and young people with cancer and their families.
With additional support from Perth Children's Hospital Foundation and The University of Western Australia we will work together to change the childhood cancer healthcare landscape and deliver compassionate, world class care to some of the sickest children in WA.
Thank you to the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation, the donation is a truly fitting legacy to Stan Perron, who founded his charity in 1978, and dedicated it to improving the health and wellbeing of Western Australian children.
