Our Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS) Youth Advisory Group (YAG) is on a mission to empower young patients, clients, and their families to have an active role in their healthcare journeys.
And they are certainly hitting the mark – taking out the Y WA Collective Action Award category in this year’s WA Youth Awards.
With a record 155 nominations across all categories, securing a win was an outstanding achievement.
Through partnership and collaboration, the YAG help to provide young people a platform to voice their opinions, suggestions, and concerns in the establishment of policies, programs and services across CAHS, with a particular focus on both Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) and Child and Adolescent Community Health.
Recently the group advocated for improvements to the food option for inpatients at PCH. To ensure healthy meals are readily available, the YAG worked to launch a Meals on Demand project.
They were also instrumental in making significant service-wide changes in how we enhance the Emergency Department experience for neurodiverse young people and are helping to establish a working group for the Behavioural Health and Neurodevelopmental Disorders project.
The Awards were also a time to celebrate individuals who are changing the way healthcare is delivered to children and young people throughout WA.
Oliver (Ollie) Lim, won The Commissioner for Children and Young People Participate Award and was recognised as the 2024 WA Young Person of the Year for his passion in advocating for young people living with disability, and from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Additionally, Marwa Wasiqe was nominated for the ECU Community Leadership Award for her work in empowering multicultural young women to enhance cultural understanding, build confidence and develop career and leadership skills.
Both Ollie and Marwa are members of our YAG, and we could not be more proud of their accomplishments.
To the CAHS YAG, Ollie and Marwa – thank you for always putting the voices of our patients, clients and consumers first.
