Australian-first parenting program comes to Perth

An innovative nurse-led research project has brought an internationally recognised parenting program to Australia for the first time.
Six Child and Adolescent Community Health (CACH) nurses recently completed specialist training in Growing Together, an attachment-focused parenting program designed to strengthen relationships between parents and their babies.
Led by Child and Adolescent Health Service nurse researcher, Jodi Renshaw-Todd, the initiative forms the final phase of her Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) funded PhD project. The project is being delivered through a partnership between The University of Western Australia, Mellow Parenting and CACH.
The training was delivered by Raquib Ibrahim, Chief Executive Officer of Mellow Parenting UK, who travelled to Perth to provide face-to-face education and mentorship to participating nurses.
Over 2 days, the nurses developed skills in reflective practice, attachment theory, group facilitation and strengths-based video feedback. The training focused on helping child health nurses support parents experiencing stress, anxiety or isolation during the early years of parenting.
Growing Together is part of the internationally recognised Mellow Parenting suite of interventions and has been successfully delivered throughout the United Kingdom, Turkey and New Zealand. The Perth trial marks the first Australian implementation of the program.
Following the training, nurses will deliver 3 pilot groups in the Merriwa, Kwinana and Swan areas. Although groups will be held in these locations, parents from anywhere in the Perth metropolitan area are welcome to participate.
The research project aims to evaluate the program's effectiveness in supporting parent-infant attachment, parental confidence and family wellbeing, while informing opportunities for broader implementation in Western Australia.
Recruitment is now open and interested families can register their interest via their child health nurse.
