Celebrating National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day
04/08/2026
Children, families, staff and volunteers came together on 4 August to celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day, recognising the strengths, voices, cultures and identities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
Held annually since 1988 and led by SNAICC – National Voice for our Children, National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day is a national celebration that provides an opportunity for children to be seen, heard and celebrated for their connection to family, community, culture and Country, and for the important role they play as future leaders.
This year's theme, Living Our Truth, honours the power of truth-telling, the sharing of knowledge across generations and the importance of telling our stories. The theme celebrates the voices, stories and cultural knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and communities, while recognising the vital role of Elders and community in passing knowledge to future generations.
At Perth Children's Hospital, a range of activities was set up in the Atrium for patients and families providing a fun and engaging way to celebrate the day.
Across CAHS, teams marked the day in their own way, hosting events and activities that reflected local knowledge, priorities and community connections. These celebrations provided opportunities to share knowledge, recognise the significance of the day, and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children as the next generation of leaders: strong in culture, proud in identity and empowered to carry forward the stories, knowledge and traditions of their communities.
National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children's Day highlights the vital role that culture, family and community connections play in supporting children's wellbeing, resilience and sense of identity. It is also a reminder of the importance of listening to and valuing children's voices and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led approaches that help ensure every child grows up safe, strong, connected and able to thrive.
Thank you to everyone who participated in Children's Day celebrations across CAHS and helped create spaces where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were celebrated for who they are and the bright futures they represent.
