Short Stay Surgical Nurse on Ward 3C at Perth Children's Hospital

Gereleigh

Meet our nurses - Gereleigh

Gereleigh is a nurse working on Ward 3C at Perth Children's Hospital.

Why did you choose a career in nursing?

I had made up my mind not to follow the nursing/healthcare pathway having experienced it vicariously through multiple family members and being so close to the hospital at such a young age. This outlook changed as I slowly grew in understanding of the work of a nurse and seeing how closely we work with individuals. I have always loved being able to understand different worldviews and am passionate in understanding how we can make experiences, not just in healthcare, as inclusive and pleasant for all. Working as a nurse allows me to do this.

Tell us about how you got this role

I have been fortunate enough to have gotten my role in CAHS through the TTP program in March 2021 where I worked with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and our Short stay Surgical Unit (3C) team.

What are the best bits about working here?

  • Being able to show the fun and bubbly side of nursing through working with children.
  • Being exposed to different walks of life shown through the diverse age groups we see daily is eye-opening. It has allowed me to strengthen my ability to provide care that is inclusive and respectful not just with our families but through my interactions outside of work.
  • Being a part of children and their family’s journey through healthcare and recovery.
  • Having a team that encourages education and support when you need.
  • Being in the constant presence of multidisciplinary teams that encourages us to collaborate closely to work on a holistic approach to care.
  • I have been given so many opportunities to upskill within my 12 months of being a part of CAHS and it continues through the encouragement of my managers and other staff to step out of my comfort zone.
  • As a whole, it is a hospital that understands what changes are needed through the feedback of their nurses and other members of staff.

What are the most challenging parts about working here?

  • Being with families in situations medical or not where we cannot help or that exceed our capabilities and interventions.
  • Protecting the positive outlook and experiences of children in the hospital especially with procedures that are uncomfortable and unfamiliar.

What is the most rewarding thing about being a nurse?

Being a medium to help empower both children and their families in advocating for their health. We have the ability to educate and create relationships that allow families to trust the healthcare system in hope that it continues to protect positive interactions in the future.
