  • Madisen Sotirovska pictured with Dr Tom Walwyn at Perth Children's Hospital
Trailblazing Madisen leads the way in new clinical trial offering hope for children with neurofibromatosis 15 April 2021 A six year old Perth girl, Madisen Sotirovska, has become the first patient in Australia and New Zealand to be enrolled in a new clinical trial offering hope to children diagnosed with neurofibromatosis. Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) Oncology Department is one of several hospitals across Australia and NZ taking part in the TiNT MEK Inhibitor clinical trial that aims to reduce tumour growth caused by neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that causes several medical conditions including tumour growth, both benign and cancerous, along the nerves in any part of the body. Madisen’s mum, Angela said neurofibromatosis was a difficult condition to live with because of the uncertainly around when tumours might grow and how they might impact on her daughter. “Madisen currently has tumours growing on her thigh and one on the joints outside of her spine which is causing significant pain together with weakness in her left leg,” Mrs Sot...

Refugee Week – Celebrating the Year of Welcome15 June 2020International Year of the Nurse and Midwife celebrates the invaluable contribution that nurses and midwifes make to global healthcare. At CAHS, we're profiling the diversity of roles and people that make up our nursing services. Meet Nimo Hussein. Nimo is one of our dedicated volunteers at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) who has ambitions of becoming a nurse one day. Tell us about your background I was born in Kenya and my family background is Somali. We moved to Kenya as refuges for a better lifestyle, but it wasn’t any better, so in 2005 we migrated to NSW. This provided as with a better lifestyle, access to health services and education. It was a dream come true! In 2009 we moved to Perth as it has a larger Somalia community. What inspired you to consider nursing? My country lacked in healthcare services, basic medications and treatments. This motivated me to become a nurse so that one day I can go back to my homeland and use my skills and knowledge to help my people....

International Day of the Midwife 202005 May 2020On the International Day of the Midwife 2020, CAHS formally welcomes midwives to our service following the transition of Neonatology to CAHS. Meet Liz Downing Liz is one of our registered CAHS midwives. With over 30 years of nursing experience, she has worked in Neonatal services both interstate and locally in Perth. Tell us about your background and how you became a midwife I started as a student nurse at St John of God Hospital in 1981. In 1991, I started working at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children as a neonatal trained nurse. Working at PMH was a highlight of my career as I have since made life-long friends! What do you love the most about your job? I get great job satisfaction in helping mothers through really tough times. The post-natal period can be rather stressful so being able to support Mum, baby and the whole family is a really rewarding aspect of what I get to do.
